چکیده

We measure YouTube content delivery over IPv6 using ⇠100 SamKnows probes connected to dual-stacked networks representing 66 different origin ASes. Using a 34-months long (Aug 2014-Jun 2017) dataset, we show that success rates of streaming a stall-free version of a video over IPv6 have improved over time. We show that a Happy Eyeballs (HE) race during initial TCP connection establishment leads to a strong (more than 97%) preference over IPv6. However, even though clients prefer streaming videos over IPv6, we observe worse performance over IPv6 than over IPv4. We witness consistently higher TCP connection establishment times and startup delays (⇠100 ms or more) over IPv6. We also observe consistently lower achieved throughput both for audio and video over IPv6. We observe less than 1% stall rates over both address families. Due to lower stall rates, bitrates that can be reliably streamed over both address families are comparable. However, in situations, where a stall does occur, 80% of the samples experience higher stall durations that are at least 1s longer over IPv6 and have not reduced over time. The worse performance over IPv6 is due to the disparity in the availability of Google Global Caches (GGC) over IPv6. The measurements performed in this work using the youtube test and the entire dataset is made available [5] to the measurement community. CCS CONCEPTS • Networks! Network monitoring;

Measuring YouTube from Dual-Stacked Hosts

There is rapid growth in the number of IPv6 users and IPv6 compliant services on the Internet. However, few measurement studies exist about the quality of user experience on IPv6 in comparison to IPv4 for dual-stacked hosts. We present results from a measurement trial consisting of 21 active measurement probes deployed across Europe and Japan connected behind dual-stacked networks, representing...

An Autonomic Testing Framework for IPv6 Configuration Protocols

The current underutilization of IPv6 enabled services makes accesses to them very attractive because of higher availability and better response time, like the IPv6 specific services from Google and Youtube have recently got a lot of requests. In this paper, we describe a fuzzing framework for IPv6 protocols. Fuzzing is a process by which faults are injected in order to find vulnerabilities in i...

What Drives the Growth of YouTube? Measuring and Analyzing the Evolution Dynamics of YouTube Video Uploads

We make the first attempt to study the evolution dynamics of YouTube, from the perspectives of uploaded videos and uploaders. Using unbiasedly estimated video statistics, we study how YouTube grows over time, from the inception of YouTube in 2005 up until now. We show that the growth of YouTube videos undergoes several phases: i) an initial growth phase best fitted by a quadratic curve, ii) an ...

Measuring Cellular IPv6 Networks for Web Performance

The growing numbers of mobile users challenge cellular network scalability. The IPv4 address space is not sufficiently large to uniquely identify all active network devices, while at the same time network address translation (NAT) middleboxes used to extend the IPv4 address space introduce performance overheads. Therefore, ISPs have started to adopt IPv6 addressing to provide Internet services ...

Measuring and Characterizing IPv6 Router Availability

We consider the problem of inferring IPv6 router uninterrupted system availability, or uptime, from a remote vantage point without privileged access. Uptime inference is important to broader efforts to measure and characterize the availability of critical infrastructure, provides insight into network operations, and has subtle security implications. Our approach utilizes active probes to period...
